Separating Ada and Leon

Review

Played on: Xbox Series X
Released: 2023

Back in the day, Separate Ways was an extra scenario for the PlayStation 2 release of Resident Evil 4, not featured in the GameCube original. Featuring Ada Wong as the main protagonist, playing her side of the story, which goes alongside the main campaign to Leon.

Fast forward to the remake of RE4 earlier this year, review here, we now receive Separate Ways as a payed DLC, albeit at a very reasonable price considering the work put into it. Let’s get back into RE4 and take a quick look at Ada’s story.

And yes, suffice to say, you need to own RE4make to play this. It’s not standalone.

While I don’t remember too much of the original Separate Ways, it’s safe to say it’s a different experience to RE4, yet familiar gameplay. Ada feels more agile, thanks to her weaponry and awesome grapplehook. This device allows you to hook on to pre-determined ledges or roofs and pull yourself up to safety. While it’s sadly not available to use wherever you like, it brings new tactics to avoiding the enemies.

Ada also has a cool crossbow to pick up during her story. This large, but powerful, weapon allows you to shoot grenade arrows. These have a fair bit of splash damage and let you to get rid of a bunch of zombies in one blast. It’s initially slow to reload, but the damage compensates for the fire rate. Otherwise, Ada has her own preferred pistol and a cool submachine gun to hipfire.

What impressed me the most on my playthrough is how much work is put into dialogues and cutscenes, really fleshing out Ada’s story, putting a unique perspective on her character. Her story takes a different route than Leon's and doesn't feel like you're simply replaying RE4. It feels like a side road where you view the big events in RE4, but speed alongside in a short but sweet version.

Visually, it’s a reminder of the magnificent work that went into RE4, revisiting the key areas. Having access to new viewpoints and areas that Leon never saw, is a real treat. Beautiful castles, villages and forest areas are depicted.

It’s a three hour playthrough on your first run and overall, I found it fantastic value for money. A must-buy for any RE4make owner!
